Our Relationship with Central Health

Central Health is a limited-purpose taxing district responsible for providing healthcare to persons residing in Travis County, Texas. It is Central Health's mission to promote the health and wellness of the residents of our community, especially the uninsured and underinsured, by working to ensure access to a full range of coordinated healthcare services.

Central Health was created by a vote of Travis County residents on May 15, 2004 as allowed under Chapter 281 of the Texas Health and Safety Code. Its formation was in large part due to a collaborative campaign that focused on educating the voters about the healthcare issues facing the Travis County community.

Upon its creation, Travis County and the City of Austin transferred the portion of their tax bases dedicated for healthcare to Central Health. After this transfer, Central Health assumed responsibility for levying taxes to finance health care services. Central Health's creation served to redistribute the cost for health care more equally across city and county residents.

Central Health does not provide any direct health care services, but rather contracts out the operations of Central Health owned facilities with a number of entities to provide necessary services. CommUnityCare is the largest provider of primary care, dental services, and behavioral health services receiving funding from Central Health. CommUnityCare works collaboratively with Central Health on a number of initiatives.

In addition, Central Health arranges for healthcare services for Travis County residents who are not eligible for other private or public insurance programs through its Medical Assistance Program (MAP).
