CommUnityCare Awarded Joint Commission Accreditation For Ambulatory Health Care
CommUnityCare received notification from The Joint Commission that their healthcare system has been accredited for Ambulatory Health Care. An independent, nonprofit organization, The Joint Commission accredits and certifies more than 18,000 healthcare organizations and programs in the United States. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organizations commitment to meeting certain performance standards.
CommUnityCare is a nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) system that operates 19 clinics throughout the Austin/Travis County area. Services provided include family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, infectious disease, behavioral health, dental care, nutrition, clinical pharmacy services, and limited specialty care. Currently, CommUnityCare serves as the family doctor for more than 56,000 patients living in Central Texas.
"We are extremely pleased to be awarded this gold standard accreditation that recognizes medical practices throughout the United States for quality, patient safety, and the highest standard of care", said David B. Vliet, Chief Executive Officer. "We have always provided high quality clinical services and strived to maintain the highest level of patient safety standards", he said. "Now the public and those we serve are assured that CommUnityCare offers the very best in patient care". The accreditation cycle became effective on August 14, 2010. Subsequent accreditation process cycles will serve as a continuous standards compliance and operational improvement tool for the organization.
CommUnityCare is dedicated to providing healthcare to underserved residents of Travis County. Forty-two percent of patients are uninsured, 32 percent have Medicaid coverage, seven percent have Medicare, and the Central Health Medical Assistance Program (MAP) covers 19 percent. Children represent 29 percent of the total patient population served. Sixty-three percent are women. Due to the implementation of healthcare reform, CommUnityCare is expanding and anticipates a major increase in their patient population over the next five years.
